How much Hungarian do you need for citizenship? If you are preparing for simplified naturalization, you will find confident answers online: A2 is enough, aim for B1, or expect something closer to B2. Those labels can hide very different speaking and listening skills.
The Hungarian citizenship language requirement concerns your ability to communicate independently. Official guidance describes intermediate, two-way communication, but the embassy page reviewed for this article does not name a fixed A2, B1 or B2 pass threshold. Below, we separate the official wording, three applicant reports and Konzul’s preparation advice. This guide focuses on adult simplified-naturalization applicants; it is not a guide to every route to Hungarian citizenship.
What is the official Hungarian language requirement?
The embassy says applicants should understand questions, present their application without outside help and answer independently in short sentences. Its language section calls for “intermediate level communication skills” in both understanding and speaking. It also says a language exam is not needed as proof and that imperfect expression or dialect is not itself a problem. Official simplified-naturalization guidance.
The practical preparation question is therefore: can you understand and respond when someone changes the wording or asks another question? A rehearsed introduction alone cannot show you that.
Is A2 or B1 Hungarian enough for citizenship?
CEFR levels describe language ability. They are useful for planning lessons, but this article does not treat them as official citizenship pass bands.
- A2: simple exchanges about familiar, routine matters and basic descriptions of your background.
- B1: understanding the main points of clear speech on familiar subjects, connecting ideas, describing experiences and giving brief reasons.
- B2: greater fluency and spontaneity, allowing more comfortable interaction with native speakers across a wider range of subjects.
These are condensed descriptions from the Council of Europe’s CEFR global scale.
For preparation, B1-style skills are a useful learning goal: explain an experience, give a reason and follow a conversation about familiar matters. That is Konzul’s study recommendation, not a guaranteed minimum or an official assessment.
A learner may speak comfortably about family history while struggling with an unfamiliar administrative question. Another may know plenty of grammar but need the question repeated slowly. A single level label will not tell you where either person needs practice.
Hungarian citizenship interview experiences: what applicants say online
These are three self-reported experiences, not a representative survey or independently verified results. They help illustrate preparation challenges; they cannot establish a universal standard.
Report 1: a lower general self-rating, stronger application-topic conversation
In a September 2024 Reddit discussion, a commenter who said they had received citizenship described their general Hungarian as roughly A1–A2, but their conversation on application-related topics as closer to B2. They reported about a year of study. Read the applicant’s discussion.
That is an example of uneven, self-assessed skills. It is not evidence that ordinary A1 or A2 ability is sufficient. The useful preparation lesson is to know your own story well while continuing to develop broader comprehension.
Report 2: “barely B1” became B2 in retrospect
In an August 2025 discussion, another applicant described a Los Angeles interview in December 2023 and an oath in December 2024. They initially thought they had been barely B1, but later judged their interview-time ability closer to B2. They emphasized understanding and communication, including spontaneous conversation. Read the applicant’s account.
The changing self-rating shows why online level claims need context. This contributor was also promoting a language-learning podcast, which readers should bear in mind when weighing the advice.
Report 3: conversation throughout a London appointment
A March 2026 London report describes an approximately 90-minute appointment conducted in Hungarian, covering document review and personal questions. In a follow-up comment, the applicant described a period of rapid questioning. They were still awaiting a decision when they posted. Read the London appointment report.
This was the reported length of the whole appointment, including document work. It should not be read as a standard 90-minute language test or proof of a successful citizenship outcome.
What can you reasonably take from these stories?
The common preparation theme in these selected accounts is usable conversation: understanding another person, discussing your circumstances and responding beyond an opening answer. Their level labels do not form a reliable consensus.
When reading Hungarian citizenship interview experiences on Reddit, check whether the writer actually attended an appointment, whether they report an eventual outcome, and whether their language level was formally assessed or guessed. Also distinguish a personal recommendation from a rule that applies to everyone.

Five skills to practise before your simplified naturalization interview
Use these as exercises with a tutor, practice partner or mock interview. They are Konzul recommendations, not an official test or a pass/fail checklist.
- Understand a familiar question in different words. Ask your partner to vary how they ask about your work, home or family. Listen without reading a transcript first.
- Answer an unexpected follow-up. Give one truthful answer, then let your partner choose the next question from something you mentioned.
- Connect a short story. Explain where you lived before, what changed and why. Practise dates and relationships in sentences you understand.
- Clarify practical details. Rehearse explaining a spelling, a place name or which relative you mean. You can use fictional details in an online exercise.
- Recover after misunderstanding. Ask for repetition, listen again and continue. Learn whether your main difficulty is hearing the words, understanding them or forming an answer.
For example, practise this sequence aloud:
- Hol dolgozik? — Where do you work?
- Mióta dolgozik ott? — How long have you worked there?
- Miért választotta ezt a munkát? — Why did you choose this job?

Frequently asked questions about Hungarian citizenship language level
Do I need a B1 language certificate?
The embassy guidance reviewed here says a language exam is not required as proof. It expects communication in Hungarian and does not specify a B1 certificate. Check the current official guidance and the office handling your application.
Can I prepare by memorizing interview answers?
Prepared answers can help you organize vocabulary. For practice, add questions you have not seen beforehand and ask your partner to rephrase familiar ones. If you lose track as soon as the conversation changes, that gives you a useful study priority.
How long does it take to learn enough Hungarian?
The accounts above cannot establish a dependable timeline. Your starting point, listening practice, opportunities to speak and study intensity all matter. Set milestones around tasks you can perform independently, and review progress with a teacher instead of using another applicant’s calendar as a deadline.
