Hungarian citizenship interview questions - practise the follow-ups

You can know how to introduce yourself in Hungarian and still hesitate when the next question takes the conversation somewhere new.

A useful practice session goes beyond answering a list. You listen, respond, and explain another detail when someone asks for it.

Below are five short exercises for people preparing for the Hungarian simplified naturalization interview. Each begins with a question and adds follow-ups. They are examples written for practice, not an official question bank or a prediction of what an officer will ask.

What official guidance says

The Hungarian Embassy in Washington publishes guidance on simplified naturalization that says applicants need sufficient Hungarian to communicate and answer independently. It does not provide a universal question list or a CEFR pass score on that page. Check the current instructions from the office handling your application for procedure-specific information. Read the embassy guidance.

The exercises below are Konzul's preparation recommendations. They are not legal or eligibility advice.

1. Introduce yourself, then add detail

Kérem, mutatkozzon be. Please introduce yourself.

Possible follow-ups:

  • Hol lakik? — Where do you live?
  • Mióta lakik ott? — How long have you lived there?
  • Mit szeret a városában? — What do you like about your city?

Try giving a short introduction, then answer the follow-ups in a different order. Use details that are true for you when rehearsing your own answers. You do not need to copy someone else's biography.

2. Explain your work

Mit dolgozik? What do you do for work?

Possible follow-ups:

  • Mióta dolgozik ott? — How long have you worked there?
  • Mit szeret a munkájában? — What do you like about your work?
  • Milyen egy átlagos munkanapja? — What is a typical working day like for you?

For example, a fictional learner might answer:

Egy iskolában dolgozom. Három éve dolgozom ott. Szeretek a gyerekekkel dolgozni. I work at a school. I have worked there for three years. I like working with children.

This is a language example, not a suggested personal story. If you are retired, studying, caring for family or currently looking for work, practise explaining your own situation.

3. Talk about your family

Meséljen a családjáról. Tell me about your family.

Possible follow-ups:

  • Hol élnek a szülei? — Where do your parents live?
  • Van testvére? — Do you have a sibling?
  • Milyen gyakran találkozik a családjával? — How often do you see your family?

Keep the first answer manageable. Then practise explaining one relationship or a familiar routine. When using an online practice tool, leave out document numbers and unnecessary sensitive details.

4. Describe how you study Hungarian

Hogyan tanul magyarul? How do you study Hungarian?

Possible follow-ups:

  • Mióta tanul magyarul? — How long have you been learning Hungarian?
  • Kivel szokott magyarul beszélni? — Who do you usually speak Hungarian with?
  • Mi a legnehezebb a magyar nyelvben? — What is the hardest thing about Hungarian?

Practise describing what you actually do: lessons, reading, listening or conversations. Answering honestly is easier when you understand every word in your answer.

5. Explain something you enjoy

Mit szeret csinálni a szabadidejében? What do you like to do in your free time?

Possible follow-ups:

  • Miért szereti ezt? — Why do you like it?
  • Kivel szokta ezt csinálni? — Who do you usually do this with?
  • Mikor csinálta ezt utoljára? — When did you last do this?

Choose one familiar activity. Explain what you enjoy about it and describe the last time you did it. The aim is to connect sentences, not make your answer complicated.

What to practise when you do not understand

These phrases can help you practise asking for clarification:

  • Elnézést, megismételné a kérdést? — Excuse me, could you repeat the question?
  • Kérem, beszéljen egy kicsit lassabban. — Please speak a little more slowly.
  • Mit jelent ez a szó? — What does this word mean?

Practise using them naturally in conversation. Knowing a clarification phrase does not establish readiness or guarantee an interview outcome.

A ten-minute practice routine

  1. Choose one topic and answer the opening question aloud.
  2. Ask a tutor or practice partner to choose a follow-up without showing it to you first.
  3. Answer with one or two sentences you understand.
  4. Note whether the difficulty was understanding the question, finding a word or connecting your answer.
  5. Try again with a different follow-up.

This ten-minute routine is a suggested practice exercise, not a claim about the length of an official interview. Keep studying the language alongside interview practice.
